Adding Zen to your home with a Shoji Screen or Door

January 9th, 2019|

Adding a few Asian Accents to your home will transform your space into a tranquil haven. Shoji screens and doors have gained wide popularity in Western culture. The Japanese word “Shoji” describes a door, window or room divider. Traditionally made of translucent paper over a wooden frame holding together a lattice of wood or bamboo, the versions we create today keep the tradition but are far sturdier and practical.   Shoji Doors Shoji doors and windows can create a comfortable, casual and inviting space, something that is difficult to create with other types of doors. The standout feature of shoji design is the translucent quality of light it creates. Australians love homes with a northerly aspect thus inviting in harsh direct sunlight. Diffused soft light is one of shoji’s main attributes which in turn protects furnishings, floors, artwork and walls from excessive fading. Providing a great alternative to traditional doors, shoji doors are often sliding doors enabling you to save space. A popular alternative to traditional wardrobes, don’t just think of bedroom robes, think kitchen pantry doors too!   Shoji Screens Shoji Screens, room

5 Renovation Tips by Julia Treuel

May 20th, 2018|

Julia Treuel competed with her partner Sasha Wright-Neville on The Block in 2016. They were tasked with renovating an apartment in the former J. Kitchen and Sons Soap and Candle Factory in Port Melbourne, Victoria. Since then, they’ve completed another renovation dubbed ‘Little Willow’ and Cabinetmaker’s Choice were thrilled to be part of it. In this month’s post, Julia details her five hard-and-fast rules for nailing the joinery of your dreams. There are so many decisions that need to be made during a renovation and it’s easy to become overwhelmed. How do I know? Because I’ve flipped three properties in four years and cried at every turn. Well, not quite every turn but there were meltdowns in the tile store and the paint shop and let’s not forget when I bawled for 12 weeks solid on national TV. As Alanis wisely sang however, ‘You Live, You Learn’, and I’ve banked a whole lot of knowledge in this sphere. Namely, how to design killer wardrobes and floating cabinets. Knowing Your Style This is hands-down the toughest thing to settle on but it’s oh-so-important. Are you

Latest kitchen trends 2018

March 26th, 2018|

Nigel Robinson, Cabinetmakers Choice comments on latest kitchen trends following Houzz study.  Kitchen layout and built-in feature preference might differ across generations, but there is one element which seems to irk renovators or all ages – kitchen clutter.  Houzz Australia, a leading platform for home renovation and design, recently conducted its 2018 Kitchen Trends Study, examining both the trends and issues influencing current home kitchen renovations. The study of nearly 3500 Australian homeowners, found that reducing clutter was a top driver for those upgrading their kitchen. The most popular built-in cabinet storage inclusions are cutlery organisers (77 per cent), pullout waste or recycling cabinets (66 per cent), deep drawer organisers (58 per cent) and pot and pan organisers (40 per cent). Nigel Robinson of Cabinetmakers Choice Geelong agrees that reducing kitchen clutter is a top priority among home renovators. “People want customised solutions that work for them,” Nigel says. “Not only does kitchen cabinetry need to look good, it needs to be functional. “Drawer organisers such as cutlery organisers, deep drawer organisers especially for the pots and pans are now so simple to integrate into

The Block 2017. Garden Studios & Garages.

October 18th, 2017|

Study areas, home office, guest rooms, ensuites, storage areas … The Block garden studios offer multi-functional spaces. In the final countdown, (last room reveals), tired Blockheads, with Ronnie even succumbing to ‘The Man Flu’, they really did well. The studios are huge, really they are mini-houses and the inclusion of multi-car garages is sure to add value to the properties in Elsternwick. Sarah & Jason finally proved they are capable of presenting something the judges are thrilled with. Installation of a clever nib wall separates the bedroom area from the study area. It’s a happy space with lots of natural light. We were impressed by the inclusion of a full walk in robe and the ensuite is stunning, even though it was not finished. Hannah’s & Clint’s studio apartment is amazingly simple with an open plan layout that will appeal to many. A wardrobe with plenty of full length hanging space – finally they got it right! Ronnie and Georgia went out on a limb and presented a workspace, a stand-alone office. “It’s a functional home office, that could possibly be something else

The Block 2017. Backyard & Alfresco Week.

October 11th, 2017|

Swimming pools, alfresco areas, BBQ’s and more. Aussie backyards. A place to entertain, throw a steak on the BBQ and relax with friends. As friendships were compromised and bonds put to the test, all contestants presented amazing backyards. The winning yards were the practical ones –  a place for kids to play, a cubby house,  a grass area, a veggie or herb patch and fruit trees. An entertaining area (with seating) is a must and of course and the all important BBQ with practical cabinetry offering bench space, cupboards, even a sink or fridge. The ‘icing on the cake’ for some of the contestants was the inclusion of a spa or swimming pool (check out Ronnie & Georgia’s), an outdoor shower, a fire pit, sculptures and other spectacular art work. How’s the Serenity?   House Number 5, Josh & Elysee presented a backyard, “worthy of being on the front cover of any magazine world wide.” Judge Neale Witaker was most impressed they managed to put an in ground swimming pool with landscaping to match all in the space of a week. The yard is grand and spacious and

The Block 2017. Kitchen Week.

September 18th, 2017|

The Kitchen. The heart of the home. This week The Block does not disappoint with a display of  incredible kitchen styling and functionality. Our favourite couple Ronnie & Georgia thought they may have been in with a chance to win this week, outlaying big bucks on items such as their porcelain splash back and downwards inductor stove top. Shaynna thought all the kitchen elements were spot on for functionality. Georgia referred to her execution of “The Golden Triangle”. This concept is based on the premise that the primary tasks in a home kitchen  are carried out between the cook top, the sink and the refrigerator. These three points and the imaginary lines between them, make up what kitchen experts call the work triangle. The idea is that when these three elements are in close (but not too close) proximity to one other, the kitchen will be easy and efficient to use, cutting down on wasted steps. Into the butler’s pantry and we fell in love with the gold sink, but could it have been bigger? Guess the overly large sink in Ronnie & Georgia’s
